Well, the last couple of years have been a lot to deal with, so we don’t blame you if you’re not feeling particularly cheerful lately. The world doesn't exactly feel like a barrel-of-laughs at the minute, and the longest-ever-winter we’ve just come out of has left us all feeling a bit grey and flat. So clinging onto anything that fuels a bit of joy right now, whether that’s coffee, exercise, Guinness or time with your friends, we're all taking what joy we can get.
But have you ever noticed how your mood can change depending on what you wear? Well it’s proven by some very smart people that wearing colourful clothes can actually make you feel happier and more confident. Cue Dopamine Dressing, or in our own words, Colour Joy.
But why, you ask…
Firstly, colours have a direct impact on our mood and emotions. Different colours will induce different feelings and emotions. So… when we wear warm colours such as red, orange, and yellow, this can create a feeling of warmth, happiness, and excitement (makes me think of holidays). Cooler colours such as blue, green, and purple can create a feeling of calmness, relaxation, and serenity (think spa-time).
So, it absolutely makes sense that bobbing a bright orange or sunny yellow sweatshirt on for the day will give your mood a boost of excitement and happiness.
Secondly, wearing colourful clothes can increase our confidence levels. And who doesn’t need a little pick-me-up every now and again? When we wear bright and bold colours, we tend to stand out more and draw attention to ourselves – the very thought of this may make you a little uneasy – however it’s been proven that the right kind of attention from those we admire or like, can help make us feel more confident and self-assured. Receiving a compliment on your colourful outfit, can further boost our confidence and self-esteem. This can have a positive ripple effect on our overall happiness and well-being. Amen.
Thirdly, (we’re really trying to make a point here), wearing colourful clothes can help us express ourselves and show off our personality. The colours we choose to wear can say a lot about our mood, personality, and style.
I love to wear red when I’m feeling bold and a bit rebellious, Nat likes to wear greens to keep her calm and relaxed.
Finally, wearing colourful clothes can simply be fun and enjoyable. When we wear clothes that we love and feel good in, it can bring us joy and happiness. Bright and bold colours can add an element of excitement and playfulness to our everyday outfits – and that sounds like fun right? This can make getting dressed in the morning a more enjoyable and fun experience, which can set the tone for a happy and positive day.
So tomorrow morning, when you really want to grab your usual go-to black top and leggings, grab that bright blue sweatshirt and see if it can add a bit of Colour Joy to your day :-)
